You must renew your teaching license in South Dakota every 5 years.

• You’ll need 6 continuing education credits, half of which must be specialized or transcripted.
• If you have a Master’s Degree or higher or you’re renewing an Advanced Teaching Certificate, you’ll need the same. Still, you can choose any combination of generalized, specialized, and transcripted credits.

If your certificate is invalid, here’s the process:

According to the South Dakota Department of Education, “if all requirements for renewal have not been met by October 1 of the year of expiration the certificate is invalid.” You'll need to pay an invalid certificate fee in addition to the application fee, but the requirements remain the same as listed above.

When you receive a certificate for engaging in a learning experience, it's important to note that it must include:

• The name of the learning experience which should have the specific topics covered.
• A description of the learning experience.
  The date and location of the learning experience.
• The organization's name or individual awarding the continuing education credits (or contact hours).
• The number of continuing education credits (or contact hours).

Please note that 15 contact hours (or clock hours) equals one renewal credit.
